The Battle of Ballinamuck

The Battle of Ballinamuck, fought on September 8, 1798, was a significant event in the history of Ballinamuck. A small French army, joined by local Irish volunteers, had landed at Killala Bay, Co. Mayo, and fought its way eastward, gaining more Irish rebels from Counties Mayo, Sligo, and Leitrim.

They were met at Ballinamuck by vastly superior British forces. The French, led by General Humbert, had 800 regular soldiers and about 1000 Irish volunteers, while the British general Lake commanded a force perhaps 20 times larger, including regular English, Scottish, and Hessian soldiers, as well as Irish militia men. The military battle lasted half an hour, after which the French surrendered and were taken into custody, while many of the Irish fighters were killed on the spot or while fleeing.

The battle has been commemorated many times since and 2023 marks the 225th commemoration!
